Windward Coast
Goat Island is a pancake shaped lava rock a few yards off the coast of the Malaikahana Recreation Area. The center of the island is a restricted refuge area for ground-dwelling birds raising their young. The waters surrounding the island are great for snorkeling. There are tide pools, perfect for observing small sea life, and a sandy beach studded with coral formation and shallow water.

Directions:

Off Kamehameaha Highway a few miles north of Laie in the Malaikahana Recreation Area on the Windward Coast.

Useful Information:
  • Only go to the island during low tide! Strong currents and rip tides are present during high tide.
  • Walk to the island over a shallow reef from Cooke's Point - wear sneakers to protect your feet from rock and coral - the walk takes approximately 15 minutes
  • Keep out of the bird refuge area in the center of the island. This area is clearly posted.
  • Hiking the entire shoreline takes approximately 20 minutes.
  • Do not leave anything behind on the island.
