St. Augustine by the Sea Catholic Church in Waikiki features a small museum dedicated to the life and times of Blessed Father Damien DeVeuster. Father Damien was a Belgian missionary and humanitarian who gave his life serving the people of Kalaupapa, Molokai, who were victims of Hansen's Disease.
During his life, Hansen's Disease (also known as leprosy) was an incurabable, contagious, deadly disease that spread through the islands during the late 1800's and early 1900's. People who were diagnosed with leprosy were exiled to Kalaupapa and never allowed off this isolated peninsula.

Directions:

Take Kalakaua Avenue through Waikiki toward the Honolulu Zoo. Turn left on Paoakalani Street then left on Kuhio Avenue. Then turn left again on Ohua Street which is one-way going south. St. Augustine by the Sea Church is on the right.
