Rudolph Meyer, an immigrant from Germany, began as a surveyor in Molokai in 1848. He married the Molokai high chieftess, Kalama and managed the land now knows as the Molokai Ranch. In 1878 he built the Meyer Sugar Mill. It utilized mule-power and a steam engine to crush and process the sugar cane. This mill is the oldest mill in Hawaii and has been restored to operating condition. The mill and museum photographs provide a glimpse into the lives of the plantation worker in the 19th Century. The family home, located up on the hill above the mill, and the family cemetery is located on the grounds and is still owned by Rudolph's descendants. The mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.
Directions:
At the intersection of Highway 460 and 470, take 470 (Kala'e Highway) uphill toward central Molokai. This site is located on the left side of the road between Kualapuu and Kalaupapa Lookout.
Useful Information:
$2 per adult admission fee for the museum
Admission to the cultural center is free
Guided or self-guided tours available
Tour takes about one hour
Open Monday thru Saturday, 10am - 2pm, closed Sundays
Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day Gift shop
