Rudolph Meyer, an immigrant from Germany, began
as a surveyor in Molokai in 1848. He married the Molokai
high chieftess, Kalama and managed the land now knows
as the Molokai Ranch. In 1878 he built the Meyer Sugar
Mill. It utilized mule-power and a steam engine to
crush and process the sugar cane. This mill is the
oldest mill in Hawaii and has been restored to operating
condition.

The mill and museum photographs
provide a glimpse into the lives of the plantation
worker in the 19th Century. The family home, located
up on the hill above the mill, and the family cemetery
is located on the grounds and is still owned by Rudolph's
descendants. The mill is listed on the National Register
of Historic Sites.
