The largest land owner on Molokai is the Molokai Ranch with almost 60,000 acres of land. The land was originally given to Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop by King Kamehameha V. The Princess's husband, Charles Bishop enlarged the ranch and enlisted Rudolf Meyer to develop the plantation. After Meyer's death the land was sold to some Honolulu businessmen who turned it into the American Sugar Company. In 1908, Charles Cooke purchased the property and returned it to a working cattle ranch. The family sold off a small portion of land to build the Kaluakoi Resort.

The ranch used to be the site of a Wildlife Park featuring a variety of animals from Africa. However, this attraction is now closed and the animals have all been moved to Ni'ihau, a private island. However, Molokai Ranch still offers many other activities such as horseback riding, cattle drives, mountain biking, water sports, hiking, camping and rodeos.

The ranch encompasses many scenic and historic sites and beaches. Call or visit the ranch headquarters in Maunaloa Town. The paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys) of Molokai Ranch are happy to share their heritage with you.
