Located on the left-hand side just inside the Pala'au State Park at the end of the Kalae Highway is the Molokai Mule Ride. This adventurous activity takes visitors down the steep, hand-carved Kalaupapa Trail to 'Awakua Beach and the Kalaupapa National Historical Park. The trail is three miles long with 26 switch-backs.
 
 
Sure-footed mules have made this trip daily for decades bringing supplies and news to this isolated part of the island, down the highest sea cliffs in the world! Once in Kalaupapa you will be guided through the settlement by Damien Tours in a tour bus and learn about the history, courage, and struggle of the people who live and lived here. Lunch is provided on the scenic Kalawao side, overlooking the cliffs, waterfalls, and crashing ocean surf before heading back to the Mule Barn. Tours last approximately 7 hours.
 
 

Useful Information:

  • State laws limit the age of visitors to Kalaupapa to 16 years and older. These regulations are enforced to protect the privacy and lifestyles of the residents.
  • Riders must be in good health and physically fit with a maximum weight of 250 pounds
  • Reservations are required, pre-paid in advance is recommended. Space is limited to 18 riders per day.
  • Open Monday thru Saturday, Closed Sunday
  • Comfortable shoes, cool, loose fitting shirts, trousers, jeans or long shorts are recommended. Hat, sun visor, sweater or windbreaker are advisable.

  • Tours start at $150 per person and include mule ride, entry permits, Historical Park tour with Damien Tours, and picnic lunch.
  • Check in at the stable at 7:50AM. Tour returns around 3:30PM

  DIRECTIONS:
Take Highway 460 from the airport to Highway 470 (Kalae Highway). Turn left on 470 and go to the end. The Mule Barn is located on the right after enter Pala'au State Park.
