Kaunakakai

Central Molokai
Kaunakakai is the main city on Molokai. Located
only minutes from the airport off of Highway 450,
this "city" is only about three blocks in size. Every
major attraction, restaurants, shops, tourist information,
and grocery stores are off the main street of Ala
Malama.

There are no traffic lights on Molokai,
giving you an idea of the size and remoteness of this
truly Hawaiian island. The stores in this town are
"mom and pop" establishments and you feel the strong
sense of family and community as you walk down the
street. The town closes up early so do any shopping
before the dinner hour. Many of the buildings in the
town are original structures. The Molokai Public Library,
for example, was built in 1937 and is still the only
library on the island.
