Kaluaha
Church

Highway 450
A large wooden cross marks the site and the ruins
where the first outpost of Christianity was founded
in Molokai. This original mission was formed in 1844
and was built near the primary population site of
the island by Reverend Harvey Hitchcock. This church
was used for worship until the 1940's and was one
of the largest Western-style structures in the islands.

When Captain Cook sailed to the
Hawaiian Islands in 1778, he bypassed Molokai because
it looked so bleak. This spared "the Lonely Island"
from Western influence until 1832 when the Protestant
missionaries arrived in Kaluaaha to establish their
church.

The missionaries recorded the population
of the island at 6,000 - just a few hundred less than
the current population on the island. This historic
site has not been maintained. However, a marble headstone
on a hill east of these ruins marks the grave of Reverend
Hitchcock.
