Hale'o
Lono Harbor
|
 |
| |
West Molokai
Lono was one of the four gods brought by the ancient
Polynesians from Tahiti. The people prayed to this
god for rain and good crops. Hale'o'Lono is situated
on the west side of Molokai which is very dry and
fertile, but fairly barren.

|
| |
Today, most of the land surrounding
the area is owned by the Molokai Ranch and only a
small dirt roads provides access to the water.

The harbor itself is a fully break-water
harbor located 3 ½ from the western tip of the island.
The landscape around the harbor is rugged and there
is a small beach to the west. The area is usually
deserted, except for a few fishmen and, of course,
during an outrigger race.

|
|
| |
This harbor is the starting site
for the famous Molokai to Oahu Outrigger Canoe Race
held in June and October. This is a 40-mile race through
the fierce swells of the Molokai Channel.

Teams from over 55 countries compete
in this outrigger competition and several others that
occur throughout the year.
