Highway 460
East Molokai
The east side of Molokai was formed almost a half
million years after the west side. This volcano
was also much more powerful and pushed the earth
upwards to form steep mountain ranges.
|
|
|
| |
These mountains capture the clouds
brought over the island by tradewinds. These clouds
then empty their moisture onto the land creating fertile
pastureland and valleys.

The ancient Hawaiians that settled
in this area had a rich and rewarding life due to
plentiful water, fertil e soil and wonderful fishing.
Remnants of this civilization can still be seen along
the coast and in the mountains.

The Halawa
