West Molokai
Lono was one of the four gods brought by the ancient Polynesians from Tahiti. The people prayed to this god for rain and good crops. Hale'o'Lono is situated on the west side of Molokai which is very dry and fertile, but fairly barren. Today, most of the land surrounding the area is owned by the Molokai Ranch and only a small dirt roads provides access to the water. The harbor itself is a fully break-water harbor located 3 from the western tip of the island. The landscape around the harbor is rugged and there is a small beach to the west. The area is usually deserted, except for a few fishmen and, of course, during an outrigger race. This harbor is the starting site for the famous Molokai to Oahu Outrigger Canoe Race held in June and October.This is a 40-mile race through the fierce swells of the Molokai Channel. Teams from over 55 countries compete in this outrigger competition and several others that occur throughout the year.
Directions:
From Maunaloa Town take the dirt road south all the way to the end. It will branch to the left and right, go left and you will see the harbor on your right.
