| McGregor Point Lookout near Ma'alaea is a great vantage point for seeing humpback whales from land. The lighthouse on McGregor Point is actually a light beacon warning ships of the rocky coastline and reefs in the area. From this vantage point you have a sweeping view of the ocean. |

Scan the horizon and watch for a spray
of water that rises 10-20 feet above the ocean. The spray is water vapor
exhaled from the blowhole of a whale. Humpback whales arrive in Hawaii
over a six-month period. The best viewing months are from mid-December
through mid-April. Female whales conceive and birth their young in the
warm waters here. The baby calf is about 12 feet long and weighs two
tons! |
