Kipahulu, East Maui
This small cross stands among lush vegetation beside Paihi Falls. The cross is a memorial to Helio Koaeloa, one of the earliest Hawaiian Catholic priests on Maui. Born in 1815, he was baptized in Honolulu in 1840. He served the people of Maui even before the Catholikc Church established an official missionary here.
Father Koaeloa died in 1846. The cross was erected in his memory in 1931.

Directions:

Take Hana Highway southwest from the town of Hana toward Kiahulu. The cross and small waterfall is located on the right just before Mile Marker #45.

Useful Information:
  • A dangerous and slipper trail leads to the cross
  • A plaque with information about the cross is located at the trailhead
  • Sometimes the flow to Paihi Falls is strong enough so that the waterfall can be seen from the highway
