Detailed Description

Honoapiilani Highway, West Maui

McGregor Point Lookout near Ma'alaea is a great vantage point for seeing humpback whales from land. The lighthouse on McGregor Point is actually a light beacon warning ships of the rocky coastline and reefs in the area. From this vantage point you have a sweeping view of the ocean.

Scan the horizon and watch for a spray of water that rises 10-20 feet above the ocean. The spray is water vapor exhaled from the blowhole of a whale. Humpback whales arrive in Hawaii over a six-month period. The best viewing months are from mid-December through mid-April. Female whales conceive and birth their young in the warm waters here. The baby calf is about 12 feet long and weighs two tons!

Directions:
McGregor Point is located off Honoapiilani Highway (Highway 30), just west of Ma'alaea on the way to Lahaina between Mile Markers #7 and 8. McGregor Point Lookout is located just past Mile Marker #8.
