Detailed Description
Hana Highway, East Maui
One of the most unusual falls along the road to Hana is Makapipi Falls. The Hana Highway crosses over Makapipi Stream just as the lava streambed drops into a crystal blue pool.
The effect is quite mesmerizing as you look over the bridge railing and watch the water fall below you. The stream is sometimes only a trickle, depending on recent rainfall, but if there is sufficient flow, the sound and sight of this waterfall is fascinating.
Directions:
Take Hana Highway east toward Hana. Just past Mile Marker #25 is the bridge that crosses Makapipi Stream.
Useful Information:
This waterfall is seasonal and depends on recent rainfall
Park just beyond the bridge where there is a small pulloff and walk back onto the bridge to look down
Be very careful when parking and crossing the roadway as the switchbacks along Hana Highway limit the view of oncoming drivers
