Detailed Description

1900 Makena Road - Makena, South Maui
808-879-5557

Founded in 1832 and built in 1855, this rural church sits on a tranquil oceanside site in the town of Makena. The walls of this Protestant church are 3-feet thick and made of lava using coral as mortar. The Hawaiians planted ti plants around the church, which according to custom, provides protection from evil.

The church sits on a beautiful, sandy cove and overlooks the ocean. In the small cemetary on the grounds are numerous, old headstones. Many of the headstones have ceramic photographic portraits of the deceased.

Directions:
Take Highway 31 south toward Makena. The road becomes Wailea Iki as it turns toward the ocean. It then dead ends into Wailea Alanui. Turn left and continue to Makena town (about 2 miles). The road forks - take the fork to the right which is Makena Road. The church will be on the right.
