The church was first built in 1838 from
volcanic rock held together with cement of pulverized coral
stone. The style was like churches in New England, the symbolism
was meant to put an end to Hawaiian ways and beliefs. The
interior features native koa wood. Today, there is a strong
trend to preserve the Hawaiian Culture and services in the
church are now held in English and Hawaiian.
