Polipoli Springs State Recreational Area

Kekaulike Avenue
(Highway 377)
Upcountry Maui

This ten-acre recreation area is 6,200 feet above sea level in the Kula Forest Reserve. Polipoli Springs is an upcountry park with towering trees and stunning views of the Maui lowlands and the neighboring islands of Lana'i and Kaho'olawe (a protected bird sanctuary).

Polipoli Springs is most notable for its mature forest of redwood trees and other exotic native Hawaiian trees such as plum, cypress, sugi, and ash. Extensive trail systems transverse the reserve. Thousands of feet above sea level, there are no mosquitoes in the area, but the temperatures can get quite cold.

Useful Information:

  • 4-wheel drive recommended
  • Hiking trails (be sure to obtain maps of the area or join a hiking group as the area is not clearly marked)
  • Camping available
  • Picnic tables
  • No Showers
  • Nights are generally cold - winter nights frequently are below freezing - dress appropriately

  DIRECTIONS:
9.7 miles west of Kula Botanical Gardens entrance is Waipoli Road off Kekaulike Avenue (Highway 377). The park is located along this road before Keokea. The road is only partially paved - the rest is merely graded dirt and gravel.
