Natural Sea Arch

Highway 30
Nakalele Point, West Maui

This natural lava sea arch was formed from an old lava flow from Mount Haleakala. As the hot lava rushes into the sea it is quickly cooled by the ocean's waters. This quick-cooling method often weakens the hard volcanic rock. Over years, even centuries of time and battering ocean waves and currents, part of the rock collapses and falls away.

The result is a sea arch. There are many sea arches along the coasts of all of the Hawaiian islands, each one is uniquely beautiful. Remember, however, that this land is unstable and could continue to crumble and collapse. Never attempt to climb or walk across a sea arch.

Useful Information:

  • Can easily be viewed from the old jeep road used to hike to the Nakalele Blowhole
  • Never stand, walk, or climb on a sea arch as the rocks are unstable and could continue to collaps.

DIRECTIONS:
Follow Highway 30 (Honoapi'ilani Highway) north from Kapalua. Near Mile Marker #38 there is a gravel parking lot. A dirt, jeep road begins the trail which takes approximately 30 minutes to hike to Nakalele Blowhole. However, you can see the sea arch just a short distance down the road.
