This dirt surface used to be one of the most fascinating places in pre-contact Maui. The Lahaina Restoratin Foundation and Friends of Moku'ula are in the process of restoring this site to its former glory.

Archeologists have confirmed that buried under this old park lies a most important historical site. Once a wetland area, Moku'ula, a small island, was surrounded by the sacred ponds of Moku'ula called Mokuhinia. Moku'ula was home to the giant mo'o (lizard) and several Maui chiefs who were interred there. Later it became the palace of three Kamehameha kings.

However, in the early 1900's the area was filled in and made into a park. Some of the historical artifacts were removed from the site prior to the destruction of the ponds, but many were buried under the dirt and are just being un-earthed today.
