Archeologists have confirmed that buried under this old
park lies a most important historical site. Once a wetland
area, Moku'ula, a small island, was surrounded by the sacred
ponds of Moku'ula called Mokuhinia. Moku'ula was home to
the giant mo'o (lizard) and several Maui chiefs who were
interred there. Later it became the palace of three Kamehameha
kings.
