McGregor Point Lookout & Lighthouse

Honoapiilani Highway
West Maui

McGregor Point Lookout near Ma'alaea is a great vantage point for seeing humpback whales from land. From here you have a sweeping view of the ocean. Scan the horizon watching for a cloud of "smoke" that rises 10-20 feet above the ocean. The "smoke" is actually water vapor exhaling from their blowhole.

Humpback whales arrive in Hawaii over a six-month period with the best viewing months from mid-December through mid-April. Females conceive and birth their young in the warm waters here. The baby calf stretches about 12 feet and weighs two tons! The lighthouse on McGregor Point is actually a light beacon warning ships of the rocky coastline and reefs in the area.

Useful Information:

  • Many Whale Watching tours are available on Maui from Dec. 15 - April 15
  • Early morning and evening are the best times for viewing whales from this lookout
  • Unimproved road access leads out to the point
  • Rocky coastline
  • No facilities
  • Fishing/snorkeling/diving/surfing

  Directions:
McGregor Point is located off Honoapiilani Highway (Highway 30), just west of Ma'alaea on the way to Lahaina between Mile Markers #7 and 8. McGregor Point Lookout is located just past Mile Marker #8.
