The first westerner, sea captain George Vancouver (1757-98), landed his ship at Ma'alaea Bay. A totem pole stands across from the Maui Lu Hotel to commemorate this event. Today, the harbor serves as a central boating port offering a variety of ocean services.
 
 

During the winter, humpback whales breed in this warm Hawaiian bay. Many whale-watching cruises and Molokini snorkeling charters depart from the Ma'alaea Small Boat Harbor located here.
 
 

Useful Information:

  • The Maui Ocean Center is located across from Ma'alaea Harbor
  • Ma'alaea Activity Booth - here you can reserve seats on any of the boats in the harbor
  • Ma'alaea General Store - the place to purchase fishing and boating supplies as well as snacks and hot dogs
