Luakini Street

Lahaina
West Maui

It was along the little street that the funeral procession of Princess Nahi'ena'ena passed in 1837, bringing to a close the tragic life of a princess. Caught between the Western world and the ancient ways, she alternately worshipped a Christian God while yearning after the old ways, including marrying her brother, King Kamehameha III.

Princess Nahi'ena'ena died at age 21. Along the way to her burial place, mourners cut a path through the groves of breadfruit trees. The path is named Luakini after the Hawaiian word for the temple of the ancient religion.

DIRECTIONS:
Luakini Street is located one block inland from Front Street. It begins at Lahainaiuna Road and ends at Wainee Street. It crosses Panaewa, Dickenson, Hale and Prison Streets.
