Makena Alanui Road
South Maui
La Perouse Bay makes up part of the
Ahihi-Kina'u
Natural Area Preserve. Located at the very end
of Makena Alanui Road in South Maui, this lava strewn, alien
looking landscape is the result of the last volcanic eruption
here. When the ocean is calm, snorkeling is excellent in
this area due the rocky reef. However, the trade winds frequently
keep the waters choppy and churned up, especially later
in the day. In ancient times the area was known as a site
where Huaka'i po, 'Night Marchers, roamed. These are restless
spirits who are trapped on earth causing mischief at night.
Every island has its tales about sightings of Night Marchers.
