Part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden System, Kahanu Gardens is filled with 123 acres of tropical plants, including more than 120 varieties of 'ulu (breadfruit).
 
 

The site is also home to the Pi'ilanihale heiau, one of the largest ancient Hawaiian stone temples in the islands. Built over 500 years ago, the stone platform, 341 feet by 415 feet with a 50-foot high front wall, was a place of worship and is still intact. The "Canoe Garden" features 27 species of plants brought to Hawaii in the ancient Hawaiian's voyaging canoes.
 
 

Useful Information:

  • Reservations required
  • Open Monday - Friday, 10am - 2pm· Admission: $5 per person
  • Guided walking tours of the gardens available at 11am and 1pm - call for reservations - price is $10 per person
  • Access to Pi'ilanihale heiau is by guided tour only
 
  DIRECTIONS:
Take Highway 360 (Hana Highway) toward Hana. Near mile marker #31 is 'Ula'ino Road - turn left. The Gardens are on the right past the Ka'eleku Caverns.
