The Haleakala National Park ranges through 5 distinctly different climates zones. The road to the Haleakala summit holds the world record for climbing to the highest elevation in the shortest disatnce (38 miles). The dormant volcano's vast moonlike crater floor with its towering cindercones is a geological wonder. From the 10,023 foot summit, the Big Island of Hawaii can be seen.
 
 
One mile inside the park is the Visitors Center. In front of the Center, the Silversword can be viewed. This is a threatened species of plant that only grows above 6,000 feet.. The plant can live for up to 50 years and blooming ends its lifecycle.
 
 
Sunrise viewing from the top of the crater is a once-in-a -lifetime experience. Call in advance for time of sunrise and weather conditions at the summit.
 
 

Useful Information:

  • Approximately 76 mile round-trip tour of park starts at Kahului - allow 2.75 hours for driving time alone
  • Campgrounds are available FREE on a first come basis
  • Cabins in the crater are by reservation only
  • Summit temps are 30 degrees lower than at beaches, dress warm

  • Admission to park: $10 per car, $5 per bike, motorcycles, hikers

  • Effect of high elevation on pregnant women, young children and persons with heart or respiratory problems should be considered· Access for disabled is provided at most stops
  • No food or gas available in park
  • Drive carefully and watch out for bicyclists and cattle
  • Descend volcano in low gear
  • Stay on maintained trails to protect plant and animal life

KALAHAKU OVERLOOK -

  DIRECTIONS:
Take Upper Kula Highway, turn left on Crater Road and go to the top. The drive to the top takes approximately one hour. One mile beyond the National Park 'Ahinahina Entrance Station is the National Park Visitor Center where you can obtain information about the park's resources, services and activities.
