Lahaina
The palace was built around 1800 by two ex-convicts
from Australia and it was probably the first western designed
building in the islands. The Palace measured 40 x 20 feet,
was two stories tall and was partitioned into 4 rooms. Made
of locally produced brick, the palace was constructed at
the command of King Kamehameha I because he was fascinated
with Western buildings built from mortar. There was an observation
tower and a "long house" attached to the palace.
