Nakalele Blowhole
"the leaning"

Highway 30, West Maui

This incredible blowhole can provide the view of a lifetime if the surf is just right but, unfortunately, it varies dramatically with the tides. This blowhole was created when the pounding ocean undercut the lava shelf here. A man-size hole in the shelf causes a geizer effect when the surf is just right and forces water through the hole, a hundred feet or so into the air.

This site is located 1200-feet from the road and about 200 feet down. Two hikes lead to the blowhole but before you head out you should be able to see the geizer effect as you approach the shoreline.

DIRECTIONS:
Take Highway 30 north from Lahaina. 1/2 mile past mile marker 38 is a wide turnout parking lot. Follow the trail down to the ocean.

A second trail is a little longer but very scenic. Park at the small lot at mile marker 38 and walk the jeep road around the light beacon. This trail then veers toward the blowhole. You will pass a smaller blowhole before you reach the Nakalele Blowhole. This hike takes about 30 minutes one way.

Useful Information:

  • Use common sense in approaching the actual hole - there are no rails to keep you back and the current could pull you into the hole
  • Beautiful scenic area - can be viewed (if blowing) from the road without making the hike
  • Hikes take from 15-30 minutes one way
  • Best viewing is during high tide, in the winter and when the surf is high
