Detailed Description

along Hana Highway, East Maui

Hundreds of streams, drainage ditches and subsequent waterfalls flow through the rainforest of eastern Maui. The 52-mile winding Hana Highway crosses over many of these waterways on their way to the sea. The road to Hana was paved in 1962. Some of the 54 bridges along this highway are from that time but many are much, much older. Ala'alaula Bridge is an example of one such bridge crossing a small waterfall.

Directions:
Just outside of Hi'ika, Highway 360 (Hana Highway) begins and continues for 52 miles to the east coast town of Hana.

Useful Information:
Trip to Hana takes at least 4 hours depending on stops
Bridges and road are only 2 lanes wide so use extreme caution when stopping. Pull off the road to view waterfalls, streams and the beautiful scenery.
Obey the speed limit. Numerous switchbacks make travel slow.
Gas up and bring snacks and drinks before heading to Hana. There are no gas stations or stores along the way.
