Pu'u Pehe Lookout

Highway 440, South Lanai

Pu'u Pehe Rock is located off the southern coast of Lanai to the left of Hulopo'e Beach. This large chunk of lava is shrouded in romantic legend and historical findings. The Rock can be seen from many sites along the southern coast but a nearby sea cliff provides the best viewing, especially of the Pu'u Pehe Tomb.

This rugged sea cliff is approximately 100 feet high making it slightly higher than the Rock which is only 150 feet from shore. The hike to the top of the lookout is a gentle slope and an easy walk. Besides the wonderful view of the Rock, there area terrific views of Manele Bay, Hulopo'e Bay, Manele Bay Resort, Sharks Bay, Sharks Cove, and numerous tidepools.

Useful Information:

  • Easy 1/2 mile round-trip hike to top of the sea cliff
  • Terrific scenery and photo opportunities
  • DO NOT get too near the edge, the edges of sea cliffs can crumble and break away - there are no guard rails to protect you or prevent you from falling!

  DIRECTIONS:
Take Highway 440 south from Lanai City approximately 13 miles. Follow the signs to the Hulopo'e Beach Park. Take the trail to the left of the beach to reach the overlook.

Many places along the southern coast offer views of Pu'u Pehe Rock and the nearby sea cliff.

Pu'u Pehe Rock lies only 150 feet from shore and is approximately 20 feet below the lookout.

This side view of Pu'u Pehe Rock was taken from Sandy Cove located below the lookout.

Looking straight down from the sea cliff you can see tidepools, lava shelves, and strong currents in the ocean below.

Pu'u Pehe Tomb is filled with mystery and intrigue.

Pu'u Pehe Rock appears almost round from this vantage point.
