Mamaki Trail

South Lanai

This trail is located at the southern tip of Lanai just before the ancient Kaunolu Village. The trail traverses the scrubby landscape here and points out the botanical wonders of the area.

As this sign indicates, a footpath of lava cobbles connected the village of Mamaki to the freshwater stream the runs through the gulch beside the Halulu Heiau. The stream was called Pa'ao after the chief of Tahiti who brought new gods to Hawaii in the 13th Century.

Useful Information:

  • Do Not remove any of the vegetation or introduce any new plants or seeds to the area
  • Stay on the trail
  • Wear sturdy shoes, a hat, and sunscreen
  • Bring water - there are no facilities anywhere nearby
  • This area is accessible only by 4-wheel drive vehicles - check on road conditions before starting out

DIRECTIONS:
Take Highway 440 west out of Lanai City toward Kaumalapau Harbor. Go past the airport turnoff and take the next left Kaupili Road, an unmarked dirt road. Travel approximately 2.5 miles to a yellow standpipe on the right. Turn right on this rocky road which descends downhill about 3 miles to Kaunolu Village. This trail is located on the right before the village.
