Kaiolohia-Kahue Trail

Shipwreck Beach, Northeast Lanai

This remote hiking trail is located off of Shipwreck Beach and leads inland for several miles. The trail is poorly marked after the trailhead and is mainly used by local fisherman to reach sites that are not accessible by vehicles.

The trail was first constructed in the late 1800's and linked several small coastal settlements. During that time, Lanai had a much larger population and was known for its excellent fishing. Much of the original trail lies under sand dunes or is overgrown with thorny kiawe scrub.

The Na Ala Hele Trails and Access Program plan to restore portions of this lost trail for public access and historical and cultural benefits. However, at this time, there is no immediate plans for the completion of this project.

Useful Information:

  • Trail is poorly marked beyond the trailhead. Check with the Na Ala Hele Trails Program for hiking maps.
  • Great coastal views
  • No facilities anywhere on or near the trail
  • Bring water, insect repellent, sun screen
  • Wear good hiking shoes - long pants recommended
  • DO NOT remove any artifacts from the area
  • DO NOT hike here if it is raining or rain is immenent.

DIRECTIONS:
Take Highway 44 northeast out of Lanai City to the end of the road. Turn left on the dirt road and continue to the end at the lighthouse ruins. Walk to the beach and go north. The trail begins at the beach before the shipwreck.

The trailhead is well marked and cleared for easy access from Shipwreck Beach.

The trail quickly becomes overgrown with kaiwe shrubs.

Sand dunes have cover parts of the original trail.
