Detailed Description

Koloa, South Kauai

Located in the middle of a sugar cane field and surrounded by thorny kiawe bushes and cactus, is a natural rock amphitheater. There are no markings or signs to indicate what historical or geological significance the area may hold. But the unusual appearance is enough to attract attention. Koloa was the sugar cane capital of Kauai when it was first introduced to the area in 1835. Fields abound around this basically flat coastal area making this rocky outcropping appear out of place. From a distance and inside it looks like an old volcanic crater with jagged lava rocks scattered around the rim.
