Na Pali Coast
West Kauai

Named after a Menehune Princess, this beautiful cascading waterfall is located off the 11-mile long Kalalau Trail. This hike begins at the end of Highway 560 at Ke'e Beach. Two miles into the hike, is the Hanakapi'ae Beach. A stream flows down the Hanakapi'ai Valley here. Follow the unmaintained trail upstream for two more miles to reach this spectacular 100-foot high fall and pool.

To continue along the Kalakau Trail, you must have a valid state permit. The trail is so long and strenuous, hikers need to camp along the way and the permit allows for camping at the these falls, Hanakoa Falls or at Kalalau Beach. There is a long waiting list to camp at the falls, so make plans far in advance.

Even the first part of this hike is not for beginners. The trail is slippery, muddy, and steep with numerous stream crossings. To hike to the falls and back is a whopping 8 mile trek - a full day hike!

Useful Information:

  • Difficult 8-mile roundtrip hike
  • One of the nicest waterfalls and pools on the Na Pali Coast
  • Wear sturdy, hiking boots - bring tabbies (special water shoes for boulder hopping)
  • Bring water and food
  • Bring insect repellent and sunscreen
  • Need a valid state permit to camp here or to continue the hike down Kalalau Trail

More Useful Information:

  • Camping at the falls is $10/person/night - call the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of State Parks at 808-274-3444 for reservations, permits and complete details
  • Check on trail conditions before begining the hike, if it is raining inland, DO NOT hike

  DIRECTIONS:
Take Highway 560 to the end at Ke'ee Beach. The Kalalau Trail begins here. Hike 2 miles down the trail to Hanakapi'ai Beach. Then hike 2 more miles inland along the trail by the stream to the waterfall.

This glorious waterfall cascades 100 feet down the sheer rock back wall of the Hanakapi'ai Valley.

There are multiple stream crossings involved in hiking to this terrific waterfall and pool.
