Melia Lei
Plumeria Lei
The most popular of all leis is the Melia Lei --- made from the beautiful and fragrant Plumeria. Plumeria trees flourish on all the Hawaiian islands and the flowers come in many colors. The most common is the 2-inch white, five-petal Plumeria with the yellow center. The trees are dormant in the winter with flowers peaking between March and November. Approximately fifty blossoms are hand-sewn to create a single strand circular lei.
STORAGE: Sprinkle lightly with water, wrap in damp paper or cloth and place in a sink or bowl. Keep cool but do not refrigerate. Average lei life is 1-2 days.
TO DRY: The flowers will fade but a great deal of the fragrance will last. Hang in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight until drying is complete.
