Malama Petroglyph Trail

off Highway 19
NW Hawaii

One of the most interesting and historical sites is the Malama Petroglyphs. These rock carvings were made thousands of years ago by ancient Hawaiians.

This archeological field has over 3000 carvings and is one of the largest collections in the state. The drawings are scattered throughout an old pahoehoe lava flow.

Useful Information:

  • Historical site
  • Easy 25 minute hike to petroglyph field
  • Do not make rubbings of petroglyphs as this can wear them away and destroy them.

  DIRECTIONS:
Take Highway 19 north from Kona. Turn left between Mile Markers #74 and 73. At the main intersection turn right. Go to the "Y" in the road and bear to the left. Take the next right. The trailhead to the petroglyph field is on the right.
