Highway 11
Honalo, West Hawaii

This temple was established in 1914 and dedicated to the teachings of Soto Zen. The large wooden structure is painted red and has a unique, silver corregated roof.

 
 
Inside are two alters decorated in silver and gold brocade.
This room displays numerous ceremonial drums.
 
 
The followers of Soto Zen firmly resolve to proclaim their message of human rights, peace and environmental conservation. They realize how precious life is and how important it is for everyone to live together in harmony.
 
 

Useful Information:

  • Open daily 9am - 4pm
  • The public is free to visit the temple
  • Please remove your shoes when entering the temple
  • Infomational booklets on the Zen teachings and beliefs are available in the temple
 
  DIRECTIONS:
Take Highway 11 south from Kailua-Kona to Honalo (around Mile Marker #115). The temple is located on the left side of the road next door to Teshima's Fine Foods.
 
 
One of the beauitful and ornate alters inside the temple.
 
  This unique, hand-carved ceremonial drum is one of numerous drums displayed in one of the rooms of the temple.  
 
Candles, flowers, incense and brocade adorn this alter.
 
  Statue of one of the founders of Soto Zen.  
 
The temple houses numerous religious artifacts and ceremonial items.
