Hawi is the northernmost city on Hawaii and the largest city in North Kohala. This sleepy little town is filled with art galleries, shops and a few restaurants.
Hawi was once a booming sugar town when thousands of surrounding acres were cultivated by Kohala Sugar.The Company shut down operations in the 1970's. Several historic buildings still stand dating to the mid-1800's. The Rev. Elisa Bond's Estate is currently undergoing rennovation and will soon be open to the public. Upolu Airport is a small plane airport located 3 miles west of Hawi. Sightseeing flights ofter depart from here.
There is a lovely tree tunnel is located just outside Hawi at Mile Marker #24 and leads to the historic Kalahikiola Church.

Take Highway 270 north fro Kawaihae. Hawi is located before Kapa'au around Mile Marker #22.
