Detailed Description

Ula'ino Road, Nahiku - East Maui

This is one of the most popular and gorgeous falls in Hawaii. The Hawaiian name for this waterfall is Helele'ike'oha Falls and is only a short hike from the road. The falls is the backdrop to a boulder strewn beach, just a few feet from the ocean. The falling water enters a deep, clear pool called "Blue Pool". The boulders in the pool are slippery but the water is cool and refreshing. Native birds, wild pigs, and natural flora surround the area. The view from the pool to the ocean is magnificent.

Safety Tips for Hiking:
Inform a friend of your route and your expected time of return. Never hike alone or go beyond your capability. Wear sturdy shoes, a hat and use sunscreen. Always bring water, a basic first aid kit and rain gear, just in case. Do not drink stream water which contains biological impurities. STAY ON THE TRAIL.

Directions:
Before reaching Hana, mile beyond mile marker #31, is 'Ula'ino Road on your left. Go to the end of 'Ula'ino Road (about 3 miles) and park. Most of the road is unpaved but easily passable when dry. Walk approximately 200 yards along the rocky shoreline to the waterfall and pool.

Useful Information:
Unpaved parking along the road
No facilities
Wear sturdy shoes for the hike
Be very careful if entering the pool as the rocks are slippery
Do not stand under the waterfall due to possible falling rocks or debris
CAUTION: As with all fresh water streams in Hawaii, there is the chance of Leptospirosis bacteria. DO NOT drink or swallow the water. Keep water out of open cuts and eyes.
