One of only 13 national Marine Sanctuaries, the Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary promotes research, education and long-term monitoring of the endangered humpback whale and its habitat.

This sanctuary was established in 1997 to protect the North Pacific population of the endangered Humpback Whales. Approximately 4-5,000 of these magnificent creatures visit the waters around Hawaii every winter. Sighting occur as early as October through mid-April. The sanctuary is also home to a fascinating array of marine animals, corals and plants, some of which are found nowhere else on earth.

Directions:
From the Kuhului Airport, take Highway 380 west. Turn left on Pu'unene (which becomes Highway 311). Turn left again on South Kihei Road.

The Sanctuary presents the "45 Ton Talks" every Tuesday and Thursday, at 11 a.m., which details information about the Humpback Whales
