This petrified coral and sand beach is located on the mauka (ocean side) of the Outrigger Waikoloa Resort. The historic King's Trail runs nearby with over 2-acres of petroglyphs, rock shelters, trails and ancient sites scattered throughout the area.
This lovely beach is perfect for swimming, diving and snorkeling and is fairly well protected from strong surf due to the offshore reef. Just be careful of sharp coral and lava rocks; they can often be very slippery.
Inland from the beach is a large ancient Hawaiian fishpond. The pond was used for raising mullet for the royalty and ali'i (kings) of the times. The pond is ringed by beautiful palm trees which makes for picturesque sunset photo opportunity. There are also educational plaques along the trail surrounding the pond area.
A shoreline trail leads between resort hotels and extends from the Outrigger resort all the way to the Hilton Waikoloa. This long and beautiful trail winds among lava, sand, coral and tide pools.
Take Highway 19 north from Kona toward the Kohala Resort Area. Turn left at Mile Marker #76. Turn left at the road across from Kings' Shops. Parking for the beach is at the end of this road.
